The Promised Neverland Vol. 9
Kaiu Shirai and Posuka Demizu. Viz Media

Volume 9 of The Promised Neverland was published on 2 April 2019. It contains chapters 71 through to 79 and continues the Goldy Pond story arc. It is 200 pages long and retails for between $10 and $16.99. The book opens with Emma being led by an older human named Lucas to a secret room underneath Goldy Pond that can only be unlocked with Minerva's pen.

This review contains spoilers.

Emma unlocks the door and she and Lucas enter the room to find a large underground cavern filled with a massive pond. There is something unusual about the pond. The water is golden and they can't touch it and it doesn't get their clothes or bodies wet and there is an island floating in the middle of the pond that has a building on it. Emma and Lucas make their way over to the island and find that the door to the building is unlocked. They have a look inside and find an old broken elevator and a table, chair and phone. The elevator can only be unlocked with Minerva's pen, similar to the door they entered before, but this time it won't work. Suddenly, the phone rings. It's a recorded message from Minerva himself. And he has some startling news.

He's dead.

He died a long time ago.

He recorded this message in the hope that one day escapees from the farms might find this room to learn all about him. He describes his life and explains a lot about the demons and the human world. The elevator used to be able to take people to the human world but it was blocked to prevent others from being able to reach the other side. But he tells them not to despair. There are other ways to escape to the human world and there are other people like him who are willing to support them in their efforts to escape. He encourages the children to find the other exits and to choose the future they want.

The phone recording ends.

Emma and Lucas leave and return to the other children armed with new knowledge about the demons, the promise that was made between demons and humans, Mr Minerva, how to escape to the human world, more information about the farms and how to move safely between them, how to get in touch with other supporters and a blueprint of Goldy Pond.

Emma and Lucas and the rest of the Goldy Pond resistance vow to use the new information that they've discovered to destroy the Goldy Pond hunting ground and kill all of the demons that hunt them for sport. When the bells ring to signal the next hunt, the children put their plan into action. They scatter into multiple directions, forcing the demons to chase after them. The game has changed. This time the children are the hunters and the demons are the targets. With the use of ambushes, explosions and high powered weapons, the children are able to finally pick off a couple of demons.

My favourite scene is when a girl says "Eat this," before machine-gunning two demons to death. It made me want to fist pump the air and shout "Hell, yeah!"

I really enjoyed volume nine of The Promised Neverland. We learn a lot of answers about Minerva and the demon world and we get to see the children finally get some revenge against the demons who have been hunting them. The children are working really well as a team and using their intelligence and experience to form a well-functioning resistance against the demons. I can't wait to see how the Goldy Pond arc comes to a conclusion.
