Angela and Sean Taylor, owners of Promhills Cabins and Eco tents, moved to South Gippsland from Sydney in 2007. They'd been looking for a property to run an accommodation business and which would offer a positive, supportive community for their family. They've certainly found it in Yanakie and the extended Gippsland community.



The day before we arrived, Angela enquired as to our estimated time of arrival so that she could put the lights and heaters on if necessary. Not only did she make the place warm and cosy, she'd also baked chocolate chip biscuits for us. Now that's hospitality!

The Tents:

The eco tents have canvas walls that let in the sound of the birds and gives the feel of camping but are clean, secure and deluxe. The queen size bed comes made with an electric blanket and is comfortable and invites the weary traveller to snuggle in and sleep soundly. The main room of the tent also includes a kitchenette equipped with the usual appliances; fridge, microwave, toaster, kettle. If coffee is your thing, you'll be pleased to see the coffee machine too.

A very special treat when glamping is the ensuite bathroom. There's something so satisfying about being out in nature but not having to put on shoes, unzip the tent and stumble to the long drop toilets in the middle of the night.



Other luxuries are a leather sofa, complete with soft blanket, a quick-acting heater, pedestal fan for those hot afternoons, and a TV. Angela and Sean also provide free Wifi for all visitors.

The tents have a small outside deck which offers views of the farm and the prom. There is a BBQ in front of the tent for your personal use if you want an outdoor cooking experience.

The Eco tents themselves are designed so as not to be permanent. In this way, they satisfy the world heritage requirements for not impacting the environment on which they stand. Promhills relies on rainwater tanks to service the tents and solar panels to supply power.

Activities on site: It was always Angela's dream to have alpacas and she has five of them, as well as one sheep, on the property. Be warned, they look cute and they come right up to the fence for petting but they can turn grumpy in an instant and will spit at you.

Rob Pennicot, famous for operating tours around Bruny Island and Port Arthur in Tasmania, is starting a new 'amphibious' boat tour which will go from land to sea and take visitors out from Tidal River to explore the environments around the Prom area in February 2019. The Verdict: Glamping is great. It gives all the joy of camping in nature but none of the dirt.

Best thing: Views of Wilson's Promontory and the electric blanket

Things close by: Yanakie general store, fuel and repair shop. At the gateway to the magnificent Wilson's Promontory National Park, Promhills is located in Yanakie. It's a one minute walk to the general store where you can purchase coffee and grocery items. The Wilson's Prom Cafe is another few metres up the road and also the Yanakie township with children's playground.

How to get there: Yanakie is around 190km from Melbourne. Take the South Gippsland highway out of town and head for Meeniyan. The turn off for Wilson's Promontory is on the other side of town. Follow the signs to Wilson's Promontory. Yanakie is about 30 minutes drive away and is the last town before the National Park entrance gate.
