Pro Musica will mark this year's Remembrance Day with a concert of moving and joyful music at St Francis's Church in West End.
Held each year on November 11, Remembrance Day is a time to remember those who have lost their lives in war.
It's traditionally marked by two minutes' silence at 11am -- the hour at which the guns of the Western Front fell silent in 1918.
This year, Pro Musica is giving music-lovers another way to honour Remembrance Day, with a program of music based around the themes of remembrance and reflection. Under the direction of Music Director Jane Bernays, the choir's 30 members will lift their voices and share beautiful music by the likes of Rachmaninov, Bach, Palestrina and others.
The program will also incorporate readings of verse on the theme of war, as well as a number of poems set to music. These will include the famous
In Flanders Field -- the World War I poem that led to the poppy becoming the symbol of Remembrance Day.
Flautist Simone Maurer and pianist Kate Rutledge will also perform in the 90-minute show.
Despite their amateur status, the Pro Musica Singers are a talented group, and I was blown away by the quality of their music the last time that I saw them. St Francis of Assisi Church is also a lovely building, and I can't think of a better setting for a contemplative concert of this kind.
Ticket prices are reasonable and entry is free for children. Admission also includes afternoon tea, where you can enjoy some home-made refreshments and meet the choir-members if you wish. New members are always welcome, so if you have a yen to sing, this might also be a chance to find out more about joining the choir yourself.
