When Cameron "Cam" Rivers is sent to prison she tries to avoid trouble, but an incident with another inmate brings out her inner demon, a firey being that resembles a little girl. Cam doesn't want to hurt anyone, but when she gets angry or upset it's hard to hold the demon back. Luckily, she is introduced to a coven of witches who show Cam that the creature she has fought with all her life may not be a demon at all, and that it may be possible to stop the violence that has followed always followed her.
Prison Witch is written by Pat and Amy Shand and illustrated by Erica D'urso (of
Xena Warrior Princess and
Captain Marvel). It's partly a story of a woman figuring out how to fit in in prison and coming to terms with her own crimes, but with the addition of supernatural events. Think
Orange is the New Black meets
The Witches of East End.
I enjoyed the art in this book. The cover doesn't do it justice, but some of the pages are gorgeous, with great composition and character design. Unfortunately, I can't share a couple of specific panels I wanted to include in my review because the dialogue is a bit sweary. It's a prison drama, so I'd expect nothing less.
The story is slow in parts, but ultimately satisfying, and more uplifting than I expected given the genre. As you might imagine given the setting, there are almost no male characters. Of course, there are lesbians, and the bonus story at the end is a short lesbian romance.
Prison Witch is an original and engaging story, which will probably appeal to fans of supernatural fiction and
Orange is the New Black.
