If you know what printmaking is, chances are you're an art student or a friend of one. It is an art form which which generally keeps out of the public psyche, perhaps because many of the processes behind it are so antiquated and time consuming. This exhibition at Manly Art Gallery, entitled Personal Space: Contemporary Chinese and Australian Prints , is here to prove that printmaking is as fresh and relevant as ever.

The artists whose works are in this exhibition are already established within their fields. Many are painters who have only recently taken on printmaking. As a result, we have a collection of works which may be experimental in their process, but already well versed and fluent in their subject matter. Big names include Elizabeth Cummings, painter of abstract landscapes; Euan McLeod, painter of figures in turmoil; Reg Mombassa, who you might know as the artist behind Mambo's old school iconic T-shirts; and College of Fine Arts lecturer Michael Kempson, who is also the curator.

It's the process of printmaking that makes the content different. Hyper-realistic textures of wood and fabric are displayed alongside bold, flat colours. We have landscapes, mindscapes, and abstract works sitting quite comfortably with each other.

Included are the more traditional etchings and screen prints, and newer technologies such as photopolymer and digital prints. Surprising too is the number of deeply textural collographs by the Chinese artists.

Manly Art Gallery is just beyond the small beach to your left when exiting the Ferry Wharf. When you're done accumulating some high culture, head on down to the Bavarian Bier Cafe about 3 minutes away and buy yourself a half litre of Franziskaner Weissbier (wheat beer). I hear it's the Pope's favourite beer, which I'm sure makes it high culture as well.
