The is one of those great 'university pubs' that always carries a warm and friendly vibe regardless if you're still a student, were once one, or are studying through life in another way.

Located just across the road from the University of Melbourne, students and staff of the university are a perpetual sight, both within and without the building. Indeed, on a sunny day, the outside seating can be well-filled with cheery students knowing they've time for a quick beer before their next class or tram home. This contributes to a laid back, low pressure and relaxed vibe; and that the PAH draws folks from all parts of the city down for a afternoon or evening drink.

Speaking of, while the pub is well-stocked with many brews, it carries one of particular note. Kung Foo Rice lager, from the Two Brothers Brewery located in Moorabbin, is well worth a try. Alongside this, they also stock Holgate Road Trip.

While these represent two fairly unique offerings amongst CBD pubs, it should also be said the folks at Prince Alfred take much pride in their food; and it shows on the menu. While you can get a burger, parmigiana, or a taco like other pubs, the staff would not shy away from suggesting you try the Roast Pumpkin and Baby Spinach Salad, or the Quesadillas that are finished with a salsa verde. There's even a Soup of the Day, served with toasted Turkish bread.

This to say, just as there's nothing wrong with loving good pub 'comfort food', it is also clear that the Prince Alfred has gone the extra mile to ensure all tastes are catered for when dining in.

With this, mention should be made of the generous seating around the bar, including the tables facing out onto the street. On a warm afternoon or evening, sipping a cold drink while looking out onto the bustle of Grattan St is a great experience. But there are also more things on offer in-house, for those keen to get the pulse racing a little.

Down back is a pool table - AND a foosball table. For those who think themselves a poor shot with a billiard ball, the spinning soccer men is a great chance to have some fun 'down the back of the bar' with some mates.

A final note should be made of the Mordialloc surf rowing boat above the foosball table. It is nice to see a place that is proud to display their links to local community groups, and give visibility to their cause.

To be sure, it cannot go unsaid that many, many Melbourne pubs and clubs do this already. The 's name just needed to be added to the list.

The Prince Alfred, a great place to visit for a beer, dinner; and to gain a real sense of community around Melbourne Uni.
