A mum of three, engineer, scientist, educator, and all around dabbler, I'm far better at finding interesting things to do than I am at doing housework.
Science fun for everyone
With Christmas over, the summer school holidays are stretching out ahead, full of days to fill with hopefully interesting and fun activities. If your household has one or more fun loving science buffs, PrimeSci comes to the rescue with a jam packed holiday program.
The fun begins with a week of outdoor science in "Science in the Park" from the 11th of January. Investigate dinosaurs, dig deeper into geology, or learn bush survival skills at a variety of locations across Melbourne. Sign up for one session or sign up for them all, there are groups suitable for children from prep to grade 6 , with session times varying from 1.5 to 2.5 hours.
The following week, try some lab based science at the Kiosc discovery Centre in Wantirna. A wide ranging program, this contains something for everyone from kindergarten to year 8.
Have fun with food by investigating the science of choc chip biscuits, making your own sushi and smoothies, or see who can make the biggest fizzy fountain in "Mentos Madness". Traditional Biology, Chemistry and Physics also make an appearance in the most enjoyable of ways. Learn the physics of projectiles by making water powered rockets, try using chemistry to make fizzes, bangs and pops and learn some biology while investigating what lives in your local freshwater habitat. And of course, the ever popular Lego Robotics makes an appearance - this year joined by "Beebots", an introduction to robotics for 4-6 year olds!
There's lots to choose from, but classes can book out quite quickly ( especially lego robotics), so don't delay. See the primesci website for the full program, and the booking links. While the Primesci office is closed until the 4th of January, bookings can be made online now.
My kids have already chosen their favourites and we've booked our spots. Maybe we'll see you there!
