Jane Austen in private correspondence: "Wisdom is better than wit, and in the long run will certainly have the laugh on her side."

Widely regarded as one of the masters of English story-telling, made even more popular by the BBC adaptations of her novels, Jane Austen's works readily adapt to the stage.

Jon Jory adapted possibly her most popular novel, Pride and Prejudice, into a fast-paced version suitable for an audience 200 years after the book was published.

The alternate name suggested by Austen - First Impressions - is really a brief summary of the plot. Mr and Mrs Bennet have several unmarried daughters they are keen to see wed. Into the neighbourhood comes the wealthy Mr Bingley and his very wealthy friend, Mr Darcy, and so it goes ... the first real rom-com.

Director Elinor King: "Boy meets girl and they dislike each other immediately but over the course of a year they realise just how wrong first impressions can be. Even though it's set in the 19th century, it's a timeless tale that's just as relevant today as it was in 1813."

Pride and Prejudice brings a challenge to staging in that there are no scene changes. All changes of set have to occur during the action.

Pride and Prejudice plays at 8pm from August the 7th to the 23rd. Tickets are $21, $18 concession and $16 children – book on 9571 8591 between 9am and midday, Monday to Friday, or online .
