Take a trip down to the beach for the day
About an hour and a half from Perth metropolitan area is the beautiful location of Preston Beach.
Located about half way between Mandurah and Bunbury is Preston Beach. Preston Beach is fantastic for a day out, especially if you fancy taking your four wheel drive out for a run on the beach. Preston Beach has it all from four wheel drive access (no dune buggies or bikes though), fishing, swimming, playground, toilet facilities and picnic areas near the carpark if you're not driving on the beach. There is also a cute little general store that does hot food and coffee as well as petrol, coin operated air compressors and beer.
We took our four wheel drive down with another couple and set up 'camp' on the beach with the kids and the dog. The men fished for hours, the kids played in the water and the sand and it was a very peaceful and relaxing day. We had early dinner at the General Store--a very yummy fish and chips; they serve a lot of chips with their meals.
At Preston Beach there are a lot of holiday houses and the new 'Footprints' Resort, so there is a good mix of holiday makers, locals, keen fishermen and families to make the atmosphere relaxing and welcome.
Some notes to make in regards to the beach: the sand can sometimes be soft and so 'all wheel drives' will have to bear that in mind when attempting the drive. Let your tyres down in the carpark before heading on to the sand. The beach is long and goes around from Preston Beach to White Sand Beach. There is plenty of space in front of the water or parked between dunes. The water is not supervised by any life guards so keep an eye on the conditions, any rips or dangerous surf. If heading into the General Store you have to wear a shirt.
