Offering an intriguing mix of supernatural-thriller coupled with a healthy smattering of intense drama,
Presence blends the eerie with the emotional.
Steven Soderbergh's direction gives the film a unique and haunting voyeuristic feel, as it's entirely presented from the "Presence's" point of view resulting in a slow burn, which adds a layer of unsettling intimacy to the viewing experience.
The supernatural elements, while central to the plot, aren't sensationalized but instead, weave naturally into the strained dynamics of the family. This subtlety creates an eerie atmosphere without relying on typical jump scares, making the Presence itself feel almost like another family member, one whose intentions are slowly revealed over time. The strength of the dramatic writing is so engrossing that you become deeply invested in the family's unravelling, almost forgetting you're watching a thriller until something truly spooky happens, which heightens the shock of the supernatural moments.
The film’s focus on interpersonal conflict; Rebecca’s financial secrets, Chris’s troubled marriage, Tyler’s arrogance, and Chloe’s grief provide a grounded emotional foundation, making the supernatural events all the more unsettling. The performances, particularly from Lucy Liu (Rebecca) and Callina Liang (Chloe), are solid, capturing the tension and emotional strain that drives the film’s narrative. Chris Sullivan's portrayal of Chris adds depth to the father figure, torn between scepticism and concern, while Eddy Maday's portrayal of Tyler brings to life the arrogant teen whose actions contribute to the family’s disintegration.
The Presence seems almost like a metaphor for the unresolved trauma and guilt that haunt each of the characters, and as the film progresses, you realize that its intentions might not be as malevolent as they first appear as the film's final moments leave the viewer with a lingering sense of unease, as the resolution feels both cathartic, yet devastatingly chilling all at once.
Overall,
Presence offers a refreshing take on the supernatural genre, with a careful balance between psychological drama and an eerie, otherworldly presence, making it a standout entry in this year’s slate of thrillers.
I'm giving this movie a solid 8/10 for its unique storytelling, emotional depth, and compelling atmosphere.
