Located at Central Market,
Precious Old China offers diners a taste of Straits Chinese cuisine. Also known as Baba Nyonya cuisine, this style of cooking is characterised by the combination of Chinese ingredients and Malay herbs and spices. Fresh chillies, shallots and garlic as well as various ginger roots and aromatic leaves are often used.
Upon recommendation, I ordered the nasi lemak which came with Nyonya rendang chicken and the usual anchovies, egg, sambal, etc. The rice itself was tinged with natural butterfly-pea flower essence. This flower imparts a blue colour when steeped in hot water. Other dishes worth trying include lemak nenas prawn (prawns with pineapple in a laksa gravy) and asam prawn (prawns with tamarind and palm sugar) if you're into seafood.
Their desserts are also famous, especially santan durian which is a house specialty. Coconut cream is the typical flavour for Baba Nyonya desserts. I had a sago pudding with coconut cream and palm sugar (sago gula melaka) which was simply indulgent. For something hot, bubur cha-cha would be the go-to. It consists of sweet potato and yam cooked in coconut cream and flavoured with pandan leaves.
The restaurant has a quaint atmosphere with antiques and vintage furniture. It is open daily from 11am to 10pm. Do be aware that, during peak times, your order could take up to 20 minutes to be served. I arrived at 11 o'clock on the dot and the service was quick and friendly.
