Living in the vicinity, I have driven past this huge blue mural at the corner of Chapel Street and Inkerman Street, East St Kilda, umpteen times. Little did I know there was a cafe housed within those walls; the door was disguised, painted, and part of this beautiful street art - unable to detect when driving past. We walked into Neighbours Cafe , 42 Chapel Street (cnr Inkerman & Chapel), after meeting the sculptor/artist Sal Lolicato at the Veg Out Community Gardens in St Kilda, a couple of hours earlier.

We promised him we'd go check out his exhibition at the local cafe after we had attended the Design Fringe Exhibition at Linden New Art. This is a quirky, no-frills, but absolutely spacious cafe with seating inside and out; perfect for a family outing with little kids, with plenty of room to move. Sal is a ceramic artist based in St Kilda Melbourne, Australia. He has been working as a professional artist and teacher for the past 25 years. He is a fully qualified Art teacher and offers specialised workshops with ceramics, ceramic mural construction and installation, Raku firing, wheelwork work and the body casting process; and he's a very nice man too.

We were definitely impressed by his friendly demeanour, which propelled us to visit his exhibition. Feel free to contact Sal on 0415 305 142 for that one-on-one tuition or to work with your community organisation to develop a community ceramic mural or plaster hand installation. It's also the contact number if you find anything you'd like to purchase at the cafe exhibition. Go and check out Sal's latest sculptures, as there are many pieces that are small and affordable as you can see lining the walls in the images here; and perfect for gifting. They'd make an impressive little birthday or Christmas gift for that person in your life who appreciates art. Prices range from $80 to around $120 on average, with a couple of pieces at $350, like the bust below.

Even if you didn't purchase anything, there's the cafe you can sit and have a drink and meal at. We had just had lunch at a restaurant earlier in St Kilda central, so we just opted for freshly squeezed smoothies, which gets the thumbs up from us. Do check out Sal's bio to get him involved in your community or school projects. you'll also find some pieces for sale online , but there's nothing like seeing it in person to get that visceral reaction to his artwork.

I've put in links for the Veg Out Community Gardens and the Design Fringe Exhibition here and above. Do check out the articles, as they're events and places worth seeing and visiting for something different to do. Design Fringe at Linden New Art is only there for a short time, so check it out before it ends. There's also the market to enjoy that takes place every first Saturday of the month just behind the community garden in St Kilda, where you can buy directly from the producers. All details are in the article. Meanwhile, give Sal's artwork a go, and check it out. I thought they were impressive, affordable and a little piece of gorgeousness lovingly handmade, to have in the house.
