Game of Thrones is a fantasy drama with a violent and subversive edge. It Is produced by HBO, who are responsible for ground-breaking television series such as Sex and the City, and True Blood. The show is based on the best-selling book series A Song of Ice and Fire, by George R.R. Martin and cleverly combines intrigue and shock, making it compelling viewing. Each new season is highly anticipated and the expected release date for Season 6 is:
November 16 2016.
Cost: $46.98

A brief summary of the story so far:

Game of Thrones Season 1: induces the audience to become attached to the Stark family, mostly because of the rigid honour of the patriarch Ned (Eddard) Stark. The season ends with his shock be-heading. Daenerys Targaryen also appeals and claims our loyalty as she overcomes adversity and accidentally hatches three dragon eggs.

Game of Thrones Season 2: Political intrigue becomes a matter of interest. Rob Stark declares himself "King of the North", Stannis Baratheon and Renly Baratheon both declare themselves King. Joffrey is a puppet king manipulated wisely by the dwarf Tyrion and less wisely by his mother Cersei.

Game of Thrones Season 3: A king must be honourable. Rob Stark loses support by romancing some random girl, even though he promised to marry one of Walder Frey's daughters in exchange for an alliance. We learn more about the "Wildlings" and the "White Walkers" as Jon Snow goes walk-about. Tyrion marries Sansa and we all want more to come out of his chivalry towards her. The so-called "red wedding" ends the career of Rob Stark and promotes the guilty satisfaction of revenge, or shock at betrayal of the conventions of hospitality depending where your emotions wandered.

Game of Thrones Season 4: Margaery Tyrell is queen of our hearts as Joffrey is murdered at their wedding and fan favourite Tyrion is blamed. Margaery then successfully negotiates an engagement with the young King Tommen. Petyr Baelish is revealed as an arch villain as he marries and murders Lyssa Arryn. Daenerys becomes frustratingly bogged-down in politics on the wrong continent. A last minute shock as Oberon Martell loses the battle which would have avenged his brother and vindicated Tyrion. A touching moment between brothers as Jaime releases Tyrion. Tyrion shoots his father Tywin who has moved from being an outstanding strategist to being merely tyrannical.

Game of Thrones Season 5: Tyrion has fled Westeros and is on his way to Daenerys in Mereen. (Does this mean he will get his own dragon?) An old prophecy begins to over-shadow Cersei's life and motivate her actions. A lot of sense-less betrayal and killing amongst all factions. As if there is not enough killing, Arya Stark is training to become a professional assassin. Daenerys finally rides a dragon. Jon Snow is stabbed creating THAT CLIFFHANGER! Some departures from the book as major characters appear to take on plot functions assigned to minor characters in the books.

Game of Thrones Season 6: Sorry – no spoilers! I am a firm believer in free TV, so I do not subscribe to Foxtel or any other paid television service. I have followed Game of Thrones Season 6 on the internet only by reading reviews. I therefore know that Season 6 has overtaken the book story-line somewhat and dropped a few clues about major issues that had fans guessing and theorising.

The projected release date for Game of Thrones Season 6 on DVD is November 16 2016. I would be prepared for delays. I pre-ordered Game of Thrones Season 5 which was due in February 2016 as a Valentine's gift for myself. It was not available to pick up in Sanity stores until March 16 2016. (Happy St. Patrick's day!).

Obtaining the disk in November would be nice pre-Christmas-rush viewing. It would also be convenient to wrap as a gift for someone who enjoys drama for Christmas. However, I would check that the individual had no plans to buy themselves a copy. Judging by my experience ordering Season 5 be prepared for the DVD to be a New Year's Gift if it arrives late.

The current price is $46.98 (Shipping is $1.69 through JB Hi-Fi or $4.95 through Sanity. You can probably pick-up in store, if you make the pre-order in-store, but you cannot arrange that over the internet.) One of the great things about pre-ordering is that if the price drops - due to the power of bulk ordering - you will be charged a lower price. I believe my Season 5 actually came through at $42.99 and as I had paid a $5 deposit in-store, I essentially picked it up for $38. SWEET!

There could be a long wait before the release of Game of Thrones Season 7 on television or DVD. (See highsnobiety.com) Rumour has it that filming will be on location in Ireland and Iceland – presumably in localities with real snow. While the delay may frustrate eager fans, the potential results could be spectacular. Another positive is that the delay could give George R.R. Martin time to launch the book The Winds of Winter bringing book and television series closer together and providing more complex source material for the show.
