Being a parent shouldn't mean being chained to the house. The usual problem with going out, though – apart from baby tantrums – is how to squeeze a pram into a busy café. Luckily, some places do keep parents in mind.

If you're looking for a weekend break on Fitzroy's Brunswick Street, there are plenty of pram-friendly places you can go.

Joe's Garage, 366 Brunswick St – Serving pasta, pizza and other standard Australian fare, Joe's may not be fancy but it's definitely kid-friendly. On the weekends, this roomy restaurant almost always has room for extras. Mid-week lunches are another good time to go, with a $12.90 lunch special.

Palookaville, 416 Brunswick St – Even parents deserve a drink now and then. Not many bars have the atmosphere or room for a baby, but Palookaville's spacious layout can accommodate, particularly early in the evenings. The pub food on offer allows parents to add a touch of respectability to their drink with a nice burger or more adventurous offering.

Cider House, 386-388 Brunswick St – Another bar big enough for both a baby and a drink. Cider House also offers an interesting range of pub food, with realistic, I-can-actually-finish-that portion sizes.

Black Cat, 252 Brunswick St – The Black Cat is a Brunswick Street old-timer, trendy in the evenings but with room enough for unfashionable parents in the daytime. They've started serving some seriously tasty food at surprisingly low prices.

Backstreet Eating 152 Kerr St – positioned just off Brunswick Street on Kerr, Backstreet is a great spot for better-than-average breakfast on the weekends and even a sneaky dinner out. Outside tables are great for those days when a fretful baby threatens.

Little Creatures Dining Hall, 222 Brunswick St – I've mentioned Little Creatures before, but it's worth pointing it out again. For a barn dedicated to beer, Little Creatures is the ideal place for a pram. The kids corner is especially roomy and a great spot to meet up with other pram-encumbered friends.

Commercial Club Hotel, 344 Nicholson St – Rounding out this list is an old-school Fitzroy pub. Commercial Club is a pub in the old style, with a neighbourly vibe. Family-friendly and with plenty of roomy spots for prams.

BONUS – Although weekends are typically (and hellishly) busy on Brunswick Street, there are often plenty of seats during weekdays. A gorgeous little café off the street is Grace, 76 Rose Street, which serves home-baked treats and small plates, as well as possibly the best coffee currently on (near) Brunswick Street.
