The Prahran Market Inaugural Sausage Fest is timed perfectly before Australia Day . For the first time ever Prahran Market butchers and poulterers will compete for the crown of the 'best market sausage'. On Friday 23 January 2015 each trader's best sausage will be cooked on the BBQ and tasted in a 'blind taste' format by the public who will then vote for their favourite. The competition opens for tasting and voting at 11.30am and finishes at 1pm. The winner will be announced at 1.30pm.

BBQ extraordinaire Bob Hart will man the BBQ and according to him the key to cooking the perfect BBQ'd sausage is to blanch them prior to cooking them over an open flame. Perfectly cooked every time with maximum flavour it seems. This is actually the technique that is going to be used at the Fest. To complement the event, Prahran Market's very own adventurer in residence Alice in Frames will host the event so be there at the Blanco Demonstration Kitchen (shop 12, Ph: 8290 8220). It won't cost you a thing to come check it out.

According to Prahran Market's General Manager Christopher Young, the poulterers and butchers create some of the best sausages you can find and it's all hand made onsite at the Market. Only premium ingredients are used to create some of the great flavour combinations and it seems the variety is amazing. With well over 80 sausage varieties on offer at the Market, you're bound to find one to suit your palate.

The plus side for the consumer buying from the traders themselves is that you can ask first hand what ingredients are used, get advice on how to cook them and what condiments and sides will work best. Why not come down to this inaugural fest or should I say feast and taste test the sausages. If you hang around to find out which sausage is the winner, you can buy some on the spot to celebrate Australia Day in true Aussie style with a BBQ and the best sausages on the barbie. Voters must be 16 years or older and there's a dietary warning that the products may contain nuts, gluten, pork and other allergens.
