Sat 24 Feb 2018 - Sun 25 Feb 2018

Come along to the banks of the beautiful Yarra River in the heart of Warrandyte Village just 30 mins by car northeast of the Melbourne CBD, for the 18th annual Pottery Expo over the weekend of 24 & 25 Feb 2018 from 10am to 5.30pm. Based on the concept of the Marche de Potiers (Potters Markets) of France, held in the most beautiful of settings with an emphasis on fun, music and great food, this event was initially instigated by local studio potter Jane Annois in 2001. Like the concept of old, it's an opportunity for potters to make a living, build camaraderie, and develop an interest and awareness of ceramic art to the wider public.

There you'll find a treasure trove of handmade fine studio ceramics from the many creatives , in this beautiful setting. Head to the Warrandyte Riverbank opposite the pub in Yarra street, and you're there. If last year was anything to go by, it's a wonderful place to be , if you love beautifully crafted hand made wares.

This year, there's going to be a special guest, Nanna Bayer from Tasmania, who'll be running a ceramic workshop on the Monday, 25 Feb from 12-5pm at the Warrandyte Mechanics Hall, Cnr Yarra St & Mitchell Ave, Warrandyte. CLICK HERE for tickets, which will be $100 for this 5 hour session. Nanna is a guest of this Expo, as part of the Australian Ceramics Triennial to be held in Hobart, Tasmania in May 2019.

This will be a hands on workshop with Nanna for all those interested in ceramics, from beginners to professional, and materials will be provided. There'll be a short break in the middle for snacks and coffee/tea etc. Nana will introduce you to nerikomi , an age-old Japanese technique which goes through colouring oxides and stains and the use of different clays.

Nanna Bayer is a Finnish ceramicist, having her roots in Scandinavian design, and has exhibited all over the world. Having fallen in love with Australia, she now calls Tasmania her home. With fresh eyes as a new Aussie, she scours the Australian landscape, and is inspired by her discoveries of the strange, unusual and often beautiful side of things. Her work is mainly created from very thin porcelain slabs, making her pieces delicately thin and lightweight.

The Expo will open at 12noon with the Manningham City Council and the Warrandyte Bendigo Community Bank presenting the Michael Hallam INCA award for innovative new ceramics, presented by the Warrandyte Riverside Market and the Lions Club award for the best stand. Entertainment will run from 2 to 5pm on Saturday with music from Black Cat Bone, and on Sunday, Sideglance, from 2-4pm.

Slow Clay Centre will be providing some free artist talks and panel discussions to get you all fired up. So you Wanna be a Potter One Day will run on Saturday from 11-12noon and Makers: inspirations & concepts from 2-3pm on the same day. Sunday from 11-12noon, Setting up a Studio: Considerations and Practicalities and 2-3pm Makers: selling your wares. The program artists will be announced soon, so keep an eye on the website or the Facebook page .

The Manningham Arts Centre and Clayworks will offer children's clay workshops all weekend and wheel throwing demonstrations for the public. Cups to GO! and even Plates to GO! made by the exhibitors will be for sale at the Expo at the Plates To Go Stand, to buy your coffee from Wendy and Jelle, along with delicious sweet and savoury crepes and an array of healthy salads from French crepe maitre, Stephane le Grand.

Cope with hot February days by indulging in ice creams, sundaes, smoothies, sorbets, yoghurts with fresh fruits or chocolate with Ice Indulgence. If you're after a bit of a tipple, local winery Rob Dolan Wines will be offering tastings from 4-6pm on Sat 24 Feb and selling wine by the glass to ease into the Saturday night festivities at the Expo site. Saturday evening dinner at the Expo will be catered for by Warrandyte's favourite Nardee, Indian restaurant.

Stay updated via the Facebook page where you'll find the many potters who'll be at the event, featured. You'll also find the exhibitors list for this year on the website . From joyful handbuilt sculptures to wheel formed and handbuilt stoneware and porcelain, to food, entertainment and a picturesque setting, this is the place to be for a wonderful weekend that'll nourish your soul and open your eyes to the many things created from mother earth.
