The popular Studio Potters, SA are holding a SALA event on Friday August 12th. This is an opportunity to see raku firing by night. The beautiful glow of the raku is spectacular after dark.

Raku is a method of firing clay objects that dates back to the 16th century in Japan. Bisque fired items are glazed and fired but then it differs from normal pottery techniques. Rather than leaving to cool slowly, the pottery is removed while still glowing hot and placed in a reduction chamber usually filled with sawdust or similar and the thermic shock, along with the smoke from the burning sawdust, provide a myriad of colours and patterns.

Included in the open studio event are demonstrations of hand building and clay throwing techniques.

Also on display, will be an exhibition of current works by members of Studio Potters, SA.

Visitors can choose from works such as Danny Murphy's blue tea light holders, reminiscent of effervescence in vivid blues or figurative work such as Marilyn Saccardo's clown series.

The Studio will be open all weekend for demonstrations but raku firing will only be on Friday night.
