It's summer time and that means Melburnians finally have the opportunity to enjoy the beach with out the usual temperate winds and cold water chilling us to the bone.

A drive down the Mornington Peninsula makes a great day trip for family, couple, or friends, and Portsea is a lovely spot to finish up. Other than the legendary Portsea Hotel , and quiet picnic areas, Portsea has a splendid beach.

The pier is a great walk for people of all ages and has been host to many weddings due to its picturesque location.

For those wishing to get in the water, bring your snorkel/dive gear, or hire a mask and some fins from one of the several dive shops on the main street at a competitive price.

Under the pier is relatively barren, but only a few meters from shore sea grass covers the sandy bottom. It isn't hard to spot several species of fish darting amongst the grasses.

A big attraction are the infamous weedy sea dragons that can been seen by snorkellers and divers alike.

Back out of the water, and the meandering beach is a great walk with stunning views.

You could easily spend hours of your time relaxing, exploring, or grabbing a bite to eat at the Portsea Hotel as you look out over the bay. From experience, it is a great family getaway, a romantic couples retreat, and an adventure for the outdoorsy type.
