Delicious high tea in a heritage listed site
Friends know our likes and dislikes, they recognise our strengths and weaknesses. A dear friend who appreciates my weakness for food, particularly the sweet stuff, whisked me away from my life of domestic drudgery to an idyllic place of sparkling wine, smoked salmon and passionfruit teacakes. We arrived at Portico Restaurant and Wine Bar with expectations of a wonderful high tea. We were not disappointed. Portico is situated at the rear of the Greengate Hotel, a heritage listed site at Killara. Portico has established a fine reputation for its dining experience with a la carte and dessert menus. In recent months, Portico has created a High Tea to indulge each afternoon.
My friend and I were treated to a delicious High Tea with a glass of King Valley Sparkling wine. We began with a selection of finger sandwiches including Poached Chicken with avocado, rocket and tasty mayonnaise; Leg Ham with tomato, wholegrain mustard and swiss cheese; a delectable Egg and Cress sandwich; an enjoyable Smoked Salmon with dill and crème fraiche. This was the beginning to a delightful afternoon. The next tier contained moist Raspberry and Almond Friands as well as tasty Coconut and Passionfruit Teacakes. This was bliss. To complete this enjoyable high tea, our freshly made Scones with raspberry jam and wonderfully thick cream ensured a pleasurable foodie afternoon.
There is a large indoor area with wooden tables and chairs and comfy leather couches to lounge in. The sunlit outdoor terrace with its attractive greenery entices customers to sit and enjoy a meal with wine or beer.
High Tea with sparkling, which includes a tea or coffee is $40 per person or the traditional High Tea is $30 per person. Portico also serves a two course lunch special with a glass of wine Monday to Friday for $45 and dinner is available from 5.00 pm.
