Portia Geach Memorial Award is currently showing at S.H.Ervin Gallery
The Portia Geach Memorial Award was established by Florence Kate Geach in memory of her sister, Portia Geach who was committed to campaigning for women's rights.
The Award is designed to recognise contributions of Australian women portrait artists. The exhibition presents over 50 finalists' artwork, showcasing a wide array of styles, techniques and media in contemporary portraiture of some men or women distinguished in Art, Letters or the Sciences, including artists' self-portraits. The exhibition is currently showing at S.H.Ervin Gallery until 18 December 2016.
It's fascinating to be able to see diversity and how the subjects were depicted through artists' unique way of interpretation and approach. Jenny Rodgerson, a Melbourne-based painter, is the winner of the 2016 Portia Geach Memorial Award. I found her self-portrait Bound by the big red coat captivating; a powerful painting showing intensity and firmness.
Sunday afternoons @ the Gallery If you'd like to gain insight into some artists' work, you can attend Artists' Talks which are available on selective Sundays during the exhibition period. Click here for details.
