My favourite market, South Melbourne Market , 116-136 Cecil St, South Melbourne will be hosting the Port Phillip Mussel & Jazz Festival yet again. Having been a couple of times, it's a wonderful free event that sees a community come together for seafood, song and a lazy day out with family and friends. This year, the event will be held on the weekend of 9-10 March 2024 from 11am to 9pm for a two day seafood street party set to a soundtrack featuring the city's best in jazz and soul musicians. Look forward to a great lineup on the main stage, a bar, workshops, cooking demonstrations, kids activities, roving performances - think giant seagulls, giveaways and more. Put the dates in your diary so you don't miss out on a great event. Do note that Cecil Street will be closed to traffic.

See here for the Festival Program, complete with lineup and timeframes. Look forward to special guest Elvis aka Rohan Hammit and his live band on stage, cranking up the energy and getting the audience up and dancing. When you see the lineup via the given link , you may well want to come both days for the free entertainment, and the fabulous musicians. Don't worry if seafood is not your 'thing'; the Market will have a variety of food trucks to choose from, so just come hungry. The Market is passionate about sustainability, and if you're a regular, you'll note the 'shuck, don't chuck' signage around the place. On record, a Festival like this sees over 6 tonnes of mussels being consumed. That's a lot of shells.

South Melbourne Market partner with The Nature Conservancy all year round to recycle oyster, scallop and mussel shells so they don't end up in landfill. The Shuck Don’t Chuck program sees shells used in a reef restoration project aimed at rebuilding the precious ecosystems in Port Phillip Bay. Do your bit by putting your shells into the correct bins and making sure no other plastic or other contaminants go into these bins!
