Inexpensive boat tours that take in the Port of Melbourne
Guided boat tours of the Port of Melbourne are popular with families as it is a really special experience to see huge container ships up close and to feel so dwarfed by their awesome size.
You can look up at the giant cranes and see the huge berths for dry cargoes such as cement, grain, sugar and gypsum. The Port of Melbourne is the largest container and general port in Australia and handles two million TEU (those twenty-foot containers) each year.
It is fun to think of where these ships have been and what countries they are travelling to. There is much tell-tale information if you look at their flags, insignias and foreign names. It is a bit of a spotting game to play while you are on the tour.
You will pass by Victoria Dock which was constructed between 1887 and 1892 and is the oldest and largest surviving single dock in the world.
Tours depart from Victoria Harbour in Docklands and include Victoria Dock and Appleton Dock, the port's more historic facilities.
PLEASE NOTE: While every effort will be made to adhere to advertised tour routes, these may be changed without notice due to vessel traffic considerations on a given tour day.
