There is something very eerie about lighthouses. Perhaps it is the thought of the lighthouse keepers of old and their lonely vigil by the sea. Maybe it is their connection with their fabled adversaries, the seductive sirens who lure seamen to their deaths as their ships wreck upon the rocks. Most probably it has something to do with Paul Jennings .

Whatever it is, lighthouses do have a mystique about them, and whether or not their beacon is flashing, they attract explorers from every direction.

The on Griffiths Island is no exception, regularly attracting tourists and locals alike. The bluestone landmark was built in 1859, and is set at the end of a spectacular stretch of beach about 290km west of Melbourne.

The reserve is open to the public, but the area is very natural and picturesque - no endless troupes of tour guides and kiosks ruining the view. The natural charm of the place and its inhabitant curiosities provide plenty of interest for visitors, making it hard to leave the place even after a whole day on just that half-kilometre length of land.

The waves, sand and rocks invite the inquisitive to discover the mysteries of the ocean they hold host to, while the lighthouse overlooks those frolicking below with its benevolent eye.

Griffiths Island is a beautiful destination for a day trip or weekend away, with several scenic walks and picnic spots with a captivating view of the sea.
