October's Festival calendar continues to grow with the inaugural Port Adelaide
BoatFest on the 13th and 14th giving visitors to the area a chance to revisit
Port Adelaide's rich maritime history and celebrate South Australia's seafood industry like never before.
BoatFest, incorporating the
Wooden and Heritage Boat Festival, SA's Seafood Celebration and the combined museums open day will take over the
Port Adelaide region with a hub around
Hart's Mill in Mundy Street and feature plenty of action both on and off the water.
Navigating one's way around the Port and concerns about parking will be sorted with great
transport options including a free shuttle service around town and for the first time, water-taxis will give visitors a fabulous tour and view of the region from the river with both options ensuring ease of access to all the activities.
BoatFest features a huge range of craft - from Viking and Dragon boats to magnificent wooden hulled speedboats like something out of a James Bond movie. See beautiful wooden yachts, fishing dinghies and cruisers that elicit memories of romance and yesteryear – think Hepburn and Bogey in African Queen! The craftsmanship of these hand-built beauties is evident and will be demonstrated across the weekend at numerous workshops and the colourful boats sail past up the river each afternoon will delight 'boaties' and 'non-boaties' alike as it has for many years in
Goolwa as a biennial event.
On river activities also include dragon boat races, your chance to try kayaks and canoes, fire and rescue displays, rowing and much more to see and do, whilst landlubbers can enjoy a stroll through the markets, try their hand at numerous arts and craft activities and indulge in some amazing food. An integral off water component of this inaugural festival will be the
South Australian Seafood Celebration featuring master classes from some of our best-loved seafood providers, and a chance to pre-order your Christmas prawns and magnificent seafood dinners!
Friday night's event launch features a celebration with a '
Loaves and Fishes' dinner Saturday night at the iconic
Harts Mill in the heart of the Port. Enjoy shared platter dining experiences, entertainment and great
Lake Breeze Wines and
Pirate Life Brews.
Chef Paul Baker from the award-winning
Botanic Garden Restaurant will introduce his menu comprising the freshest local seafood – from Tommy Ruff, Calamari, Crabs, Kinkawoonka Mussels, Goolwa Pipi's, Bluefin Tuna Sashimi, Spencer Gulf Prawns, Hiramasa Kingfish and more which will make for a fantastic night out.
Additionally, the three biggest museums in Port Adelaide, the
South Australian Maritime Museum, National Railway Museum and
South Australian Aviation Museum will all hold their annual 'open days' over the weekend – the
FREE shuttle bus will loop from the museums and
Harts Mill.
Enjoy land and water displays, masterclasses in seafood, beer and wine, local music and special museum programs over the two-day festival.
To be in the heart of the festival and make a weekend of it, why not book a room at the
Quest Apartments overlooking the river.
