Visitors to Hong Kong will surely notice the many street snack stalls around the city especially in the Tsim Sha Tsui and Yaumatei areas of Kowloon. One of the most popular of street snacks and local favourites, especially at night, are the skewers of meat, seafood and vegetables available at hawker stalls that dot busy pedestrian sidewalks.

Distracted by the colours, smells and buzz of people clamouring around such a stall during my travels to Hong Kong, I decided to get a share of the local snacking action. There were various fried and boiled items to tempt the eye including the familiar sausages, curry fish balls, crab balls, beancurd puffs, squid tentacles and the more exotic pig's intestines.

[ADVERT]The individual street vendor may or may not speak English but all you really need to do is to point to what appeals to you. The item will be boiled quickly and placed in a metal bowl before you, where you can add any sauce you fancy. If you're ordering several skewers, the vendor will bag them for you to takeaway.

With the continuous stream of adult and child customers, don't expect any explanation of each item so just point, collect and taste. With each skewer costing only HKD5 to HKD10, it makes for a cheap energy snack to fuel your continuous Hong Kong shopping spree.
