This is a news flash for all those lovers of delicious New York style cupcakes, and let's face it, isn't that everybody? Poppy Cakes , Brisbane's pre-eminent purveyors of classic cupcakes, have expanded their operations beyond their Fortitude Valley Emporium home and have now 'poppied' up in Brisbane's CBD.

I don't often visit this end of the city, so imagine my delight when I discovered this little secret right at the bottom of my husband's office block last week. It would have brightened up my sodden day, but for the fact that they had shut up shop for the day, having already sold out of their baked beauties. I was left staring forlornly into their rather inconspicuous premises, thinking about what might have been.


Hours and Flavours
And herein lies one of the two possible downsides of my discovery. The Pop-up Shop is open from 8 am until sold out so the trick is to get in early. The other downside? Only limited flavours are available for walk-in customers. But who wouldn't be happy with this selection: Vanilla Vanilla, Red Velvet, Chocolate Chocolate, Simone's Vanilla Passion, Chocolate Peanut Butter, Salted Caramel, Lemon Poppyseed, and Low Gluten.

Ordering
Smart cupcake connoisseurs will avail themselves of the pre-ordering service, though. Orders for all your Poppy Cakes favourites, including large cakes, can be placed with the Fortitude Valley store for pick up in the city pop up shop from 9.30 am the next day. Just phone (07) 3257 4844.

You would think this should be a 'happily ever after after' story but my great discoveries are often ultimately cursed. I'm the person who finds the perfect perfume, only to have production discontinued after I buy my first bottle. Well, wouldn't you know it? My husband's office is moving right to the other end of the CBD tomorrow so no need to ask what I'm doing today. I'm off to surprise my husband with a visit and some chocolate peanut butter and salted caramel cupcakes. If they last that long, that is. After all, it's a long trip up in the elevator.
