As part of National Organising Week, recycle your technological junk for free at Chadstone on Thursday 11 September.

Firstly, what do you call our old computers, broken mobile phones, obsolete analogue TV's or other technical junk lying around that end up in landfill?

Our friends at the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) have officially named it e-waste, and found it to be one of the fastest growing types of waste. Alarmingly, research by the ABS has found that of the 15.7 million computers that reached their 'end of life' in Australia in 2007-08, only 1.5 million were recycled - that's less the 10%.

Secondly what is the problem with E-waste?

The increase in consumption of raw materials, taking up of landfill space and disposal of hazardous substances in areas where they could leach into soil and water is irresponsible and an environmental nightmare.

Finally, what can I do to help?

If you have technological junk, but are unsure of how to dispose of it, I urge you to take your goods to the Chadstone Homemaker Centre on Thursday 11 September, and meet the professionals that will recycle your technological junk for free.

From 11.30am until 1.30pm there will be a Truck outside of Harvey Norman, collecting donations of basically anything to do with technology from old chunky televisions to broken or outdated mobile phones to tablets. Rest assured your junk will be RECYCLED, diverting it from becoming E-waste.

Items that can be accepted on the day include:

Computers, mobile phones, TV's, video cassette players and DVD players, ipads, ipods and laptops.

Look for the Professional AAPO Organisers in orange T-Shirts and recycle your unwanted technological goods BEFORE they become E-waste.
