The best way to enjoy Shakespeare in Melbourne
A three-storey, 16-sided, 900-person capacity theatre will "pop-up" next to the iconic Sidney Myer Music Bowl this September through to November and will house the most spectacular Shakespeare performances that Melbourne has seen yet.
The Pop-up Globe is a full-scale temporary working replica of one of the greatest theatres in history, the Globe Theatre in London. The construction will be set up in Melbourne's newly-christened Shakespeare Gardens.
This dazzling construction will take you back in time to enjoy all the theatrical trickery of the Jacobean era. Expect cannons, flaming arrows, hundreds of litres of fake blood, hand-forged armoury and over 450 beautiful bespoke period costumes pieces made by the Pop-up Globe's in-house wardrobe team.
The Pop-up Globe was initially planned as a one-off celebration of the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare's death in 2016, set up in Auckland NZ. Due to the success of the Globe in NZ, which saw over 100,000 attend after the season was extended twice, the project gained worldwide recognition and Melbourne wanted a piece of the Shakespeare pie!
The Pop-up Globe, complete with advanced scaffold technology, means all audience members are seated within 15 metres of the heart of the stage where Shakespeare's great plays such as As You Like It, Much Ado About Nothing, Othello and Henry V will perform as spring descends onto Melbourne. Additionally, a newly commissioned performance Around the Globe in 60 Minutes will take audience members on a journey through the history of the Globe Theatre; from the rise and fall of the open-air amphitheatre after fire and war with stories told by some rather outrageous characters.
