On the northern end of Lonsdale Street in Braddon, you'll spy some paint-box bright beanbags under a curbside tree inviting you to sit and take five. They mark the entrance to POP Canberra which, as the name suggests, began life as a pop-up shop but thankfully decided to stick around as a full-time shopfront jam-packed with handmade, local loveliness.
POP Canberra is a breath of fresh air on the retail scene: focused on supporting small businesses, makers and artists who all work and live in the Canberra region, it offers a truly local shopping experience. Originally established in 2018 as a pop-up shop that focused on locally made seasonal gifts, the permanent POP calls a purpose-built, bricks and mortar shopfront on Canberra's busy Lonsdale Street home.
POP is a beautiful place to shop for local goodies
When you step inside, it's hard not to smile - the space is bursting with a perfectly curated selection of beautiful things and there's a stylish sense of fun in the displays. Inside, you'll find food (for humans and pets), alcohol, art, pottery, jewellery, homewares, fashion stationery and more. Every time you think you've spotted everything, something else will catch your eye.
There's a real focus on quality and on keeping it local and POP Canberra manages to showcase the amazing talent of Canberra's creative community in one central and beautiful shopfront. While the space isn't huge, the clever layout makes use of every bit of space and there's literally something for everyone inside.
As well as the real-life shopfront, there is an online store offering many of the POP treasures and you'll also be able to read brand profiles on the POP blog giving you a glimpse of the makers and creatives behind the POP brands. Next time you're looking for a gift or just want to treat yourself, POP Canberra is the perfect place to support local and find something amazing.
