Pome Fest 2019 – Orchard and Packhouse Open Day
Various orchards and packhouses in the Adelaide Hills are hosting tours on Friday 31 May 2019 as part of Pome Fest 2019, a series of events happening from 31 May to 1 June to celebrate the end of the apple and pear harvest in the Adelaide Hills. The word "pome" is a Middle English term for fruit.
These tours are great opportunities to learn about how apples and pears make their way from the trees to the shops. The orchards and packhouses participating in this event are listed below:
Lenswood Apples: 9 Coldstore Road, Lenswood, SA – a guided tour to see how apples make their way from the trees to supermarkets and fruit shops
Drury Pear Packhouse: 656 Paracombe Road, Inglewood, SA – a visit to a packing shed to learn about clean and green South Australian pear production, storage practices and packing
Lureland Apple Orchard: 580 Swamp Road, Lenswood, SA – learn about the seasonal and technical aspects of producing quality fruits
Ceravolo Orchards: 376A Lobethal Road, Ashton, SA – a tour of a packing shed and juicing facility
Magarey Orchard: 40 Magarey Road, Coromandel Valley, SA – a walk around the orchard to learn about how pear trees are grown, pruned and picked, followed by a visit to the packing shed to find out about grading and storage of the fruits
