An Unconvincing Remake

Almost 30 years after the release of the original Poltergeist, Gil Kenan makes an inferior attempt to remake the 1982 horror, throwing in a few fresh twists in the story and trying to make it appealing to the modern audience with the additional use of latest technology. However, if you have seen the original, this new update will not just seem lousy, but rather uneven at most scenes.

Of course the original series benefit from the controversies surrounding it, which involve the use of real human skeletons in the first film and the real life death of 4 characters before the release of the 3rd film, including the untimely demise of Heather O'Rourke at the age of 12 and Dominique Dunne at 22, who played the family's two daughters.

Maintaining the master story, a family is haunted by noisy evil entities who eventually abduct their youngest daughter and the family must come together to retrieve her before she disappears into the light forever.

The haunted house concept is not up to the standards of Haunting in Connecticut, Conjuring and Insidious. The screenplay lacks creativity and is neither jumpy nor scary, but only a faded reminder of the original film.

The story has too many loopholes with some scenes seriously lacking in realistic human reactions to a haunting experience or the abduction of a family member, but child actor Kennedi Clements has delivered an outstanding performance as the lead character, Maddie, who gets taken by the poltergeists haunting the house.

This film might, however, interest those who had not seen the original film but for others it is a downgraded version of the classic.
