"Polo by the Sea" hosted its annual polo event on the Gold Coast at the end of May. Sister to the "Polo in the City" series, this fixture is set to become a favourite on the Gold Coast calendar. Although it's fast paced and exciting to watch, it's much more than just about the game of polo. It's a spectator sport in more ways than one. Watching the horses, the riders and the competition is highly entertaining. Watching the polo crowd is another attraction in itself.

Corporate marquees line the field. Stylish entertaining is the name of the game. Polo players mingle with the crowd. First up were Team CBA & Team Halifax, before the National Polo League Match between Melbourne and Gold Coast. The league match proved to be a very close game. However, Gold Coast managed to retain their winning status, as they defended their title against Melbourne and emerged victorious.

The polo players are highly skilled riders. Their mounts are capable of travelling at speeds of up to 60kmph and of stopping and turning on the proverbial sixpence. Competition is fierce and the commentary is as fast paced as the game itself. Enthusiasm wasn't dampened, despite the rain during the main match. If anything, it gave the crowds a perfect excuse to retreat back under the shelter of the marquees and order more champagne.

The half time races of a two-legged variety brought out the smiles and the cheers. The swimwear fashion parade was an eye-catching addition to the day's events, showcasing Togs Swimwear, with its focus on colour and chevron prints. "Fashions on the Field" winners took home a $300 Colin Heaney voucher for the ladies and the men's division winner scored a $300 Vicomte A voucher. Polo is the backdrop to the glamour. Just as the polo field is no place for the fainthearted rider, the polo crowd is no place for wallflowers. The people watching is fascinating.

Attending a polo event and not sure what to wear? Then read "What to Wear by Posing Rose" . The advice on the heels to wear is pretty sound. It must be the beach setting that brings out the blend of fashion and polo. We did enjoy the complimentary shoulder massages courtesy of Wings Day Spa and their bare chested male therapists with their cheeky red wings raised smiles.[BREAK]
Traditionally seen as the elitist Sport of Kings, only being accessible to the wealthy upper class, polo in Australia seeks to change that image. Hats off to Janek Gazecki & Raki Baillieu for their endeavors to bring polo to the people. Their company "Polo Enterprises Australia" aims to "introduce polo to a broader audience, promote professional polo players and attract new players to the sport". PEA events have also raised money for a number of charities. Visit the Polo by the Sea website for more information.[BREAK]

You couldn't ask for a more perfect location for Polo on the Gold Coast. Surrounded by the sea, Doug Jennings Park lies at the North end of the Spit at Main Beach Surfers Paradise. Easily accommodating the polo field, hospitality marquees, the horse floats and the motorhomes of the polo players and still leaving ample parking for the limos, the venue has been well selected. Your first glimpse of the yachts on the water, as you turn onto the Spit, sets a beautiful scene for a memorable day out. There's a unique blend of action and style, as you watch the game of polo, in a beach setting. It's a highly social event and is certainly a day out with a difference.
