A market with a great difference and a market with heart. It took me several drafts amidst streaming tears to try and convey this message with the respect it deserves. This is a story of loss that surpasses any other loss - the loss of a child. And the story of a determined mother committed to keeping the memory of her precious child alive.
This is Becca's Story
I am very excited to be organising this annual event and in doing so, raising money to donate to the QLD Homicide Victims Support Group in honour and memory of my son, Nathan. I would LOVE to be able to raise $5000 by the end of the Polka Dots and Stripes Halloween Market on the 26th of October!
I am hoping to do this through sale of raffle tickets and the gold coin entry for this event and of course any extra donations on the day. On the 7th of February 2008 my life was completely shattered by a visit from a Police Officer at my place of work. He told me that Nathan and his friend Jye had been hit by a car, he said a lot more but I can't really remember, so much of that time is a struggle for me to unlock.
The boys had been walking home from school when a woman, high on her daily cocktail of drugs and running late for her Probation appointment and her Centrelink appointment, drove on to the footpath to overtake 4 cars. Jye who was like a son to me, was deceased and Nathan was on life support. Nathan fought for 3 days before passing away on the 10th of February. Our head knows he's gone but your heart just does not understand it.
Still today, my heart does not understand it My 2 other sons, James and Jacob are OK. They are caring, funny and amazing young men and are my shining lights along with their brother Nathan who I know is beside me. We've learnt for the most part of our lives, to walk beside our grief rather than have it as a dark cloud over us. And when tomorrow comes, you will not be forgotten.
Queensland Homicide Victim's Support Group is a compassionate group of volunteers who are there for people that have lost a loved one through homicide. They offer emotional support and are fantastic advocates and educators of the effect that homicide has on individuals and communities.
