Point Loop Walk @ Muogamarra Nature Reserve

If you're heading to Muogamarra Nature Reserve to see the wildflowers this year, Point Loop is one walk I recommend. It's only two kilometres long, completely flat and begins and ends in the reserve's car park. On offer is an amazing range of wildflowers, and some pretty good views too.
When I visited the reserve, the car park was so full that my companion and I struggled to see where the walk began. You may find it's easier to instead aim for the map near the buildings where you register (it's on a large sign) and orient yourself from there.
Once you start, you'll find
wildflowers everywhere, and quite variety too. Walks like this one up the top of the reserve, closest to the picnic area, seem to be the best place to appreciate them.
Most people who visit the reserve come for the flowers, so everyone has pretty elaborate photography equipment to
capture the sights. On my visit, almost everyone I saw was busy taking photos.
I didn't have a tripod or SLR, but I still managed to capture some of the flowers on this walk on my simple point-and-shoot camera:
There are definitely lots of wildflowers to see along Point Loop, but since they're what the reserve's all about, you will be able to enjoy them whatever walk you choose to do. Even the longer ones like
Peats Crater Walk have some great flora too discover.
What makes Point Loop unique is the view on offer at the
Western Lookout, which is located about halfway round the loop. This lookout is quite different from Tipper Lookout, another one quite close the car park which has its own platform and railing. Western Lookout requires you to head out onto a natural rock, but the
open views you get are well worth it.
Because the reserve is up so high (nearby Cowan is the highest suburb in Sydney) you also get great views at other stages along the route too.
The only problem with Point Loop Walk is that, like other walks at the reserve, it is only open to the public for
six weekends of the year, during the wildflower season of August and September. Otherwise, you'll have to wait for one of the special occasions when
guided tours take place.
Information on dates and times for all tours, as well as the current season's open days, can be accessed
