Sitting here on a winter's day at the beginning of the week it is peaceful with only the day to day business - deliveries, cleaning and workings of the locals. There are a handful of people scattered about lingering over coffee and breakfast. These I presume are retirees, travellers and visitors to the island for none of us appear to be in any kind of hurry.
This special place feels like we could be on an exotic island somewhere with the stunning views of the ocean but here we are just a ferry trip across the bay from Brisbane. We are sitting across the street from the beginning of North Gorge walk, looking now for the next moment to come along.
What to do - what to do? Here in Point Lookout you won't find any of the large department stores but you will find a number of shops, locally owned and operated and all with their own character. These consist of a handful of small cafes, pizza, coffee bars and an ice cream parlour. There are grocery stores and a small amazing place that has a mutitude of bathing suits should you forget yours.
There is a scuba shop, a bowls club and the surf Club. These all span the lengthily road into the point as you drive up from the ferry. The Surf Club you will find just off Main Beach, a little farther on past the bus station. A few restaurants round out the list but bookings during summer and Easter holidays are essential as the numbers of people in the small town can double or more.
With no shortage of accommodations there is one to suit everyone's needs. Apartments, holiday houses for weekly rentals, hotels and resorts can all be found here.
There are a few campgrounds if you so chose to go a different route. There is also beach camping around Point Lookout for those of you with 4WD's. It is best to go to more2redlands.com.au for camping information and 4WD permits as well as camping areas off the beaten track.
With no shortage of beaches all dotted along the main road into the town you can pick one and spend a day, a week or however long you want to be in this tiny paradise.
Point Lookout is for those who chose a relaxing, quite escape from the city yet want a little bit of island life as well.
