Its the roads less travelled where you discover gems
The Government's Directive to Isolate and Self Distance has had some huge positives; we've taken to baking with gusto, allowed our creative juices to follow pursuits we would normally disdain like art journals and paint by numbers, and garden centres have been unable to keep up with the demand for vegetable seedlings.

I admit that my initial reaction to the "pending apocalypse" was to plant vegetables, even though I had no expertise in this area whatsoever. As a consequence, my meagre lawn has been overrun by pumpkin tendrils.

So, my fellow gardening gurus, guess what I recently discovered on a recent escape from the city? Pohlmans Nursery is the largest independently-owned plant producer and nursery in Queensland located in the fertile Lockyer Valley region on 150 acres, 40 of which is devoted to intensive plant production.

Established in 1976, Pohlmans Nursery offers the widest and most innovative product range including gourmet vegetables, fresh herbs, bright potted flowers, indoor foliage and trees and shrubs. They are also the largest wholesale nursery on the Eastern seaboard, supplying a range of innovatively marketed quality plants to almost 1000 nurseries, garden centres and selected stores across Australia.

There are pots of flowering colour, shrubs, and fruit trees for sale as well as all the other accoutrements required to encourage a garden to flourish.

And guess what? Seedlings that don't make the grade for the wholesale side of the business are sold through their onsite factory outlet. This obviously changes on a daily basis, which only adds to the thrill of the chase. For those of us who are winging it as green thumbs, this is a gardener's dream. Look what I picked up for $1!

Just ten minutes out of Gatton, Pohlmans Nursery at 171 Redbank Creek Road, Adare, is open seven days a week (except some public holidays) between 8:30 am and 5:00 pm. This garden centre is so organised that it caters for groups for tours and packages.

A gem indeed. I’m planning my visit. I’ve got a garden started with sage varieties so more herbs will help.
