Podium 1 Cafe

A Brisbane-based mum and writer, I love nothing more than a day out with family and friends.

I've always felt a good yardstick of a suburb's livability is the number and quality of cafes that it hosts. When Moorooka's newest café, Podium 1, opened its doors in December last year, the coffee lovers of Moorooka rejoiced and the livability of our suburb improved just a little.

Moorooka was not previously devoid of coffee shops, however those that did exist were not located in easily accessible locations. Podium 1 is part of the brand new shopping complex on Beaudesert Road, with the big draw card being that it is conveniently situated opposite Woolworths. Podium 1's pole position is a huge plus for this café as it is also in close proximity to bus stops and train stations, and offers plenty of nearby parking.

It is perfect for that quick caffeine hit before work, and it is very popular with the after school pick-up crew in search of coffee and cake with the kids. Of course the majority of customers are those looking for a quick cappuccino to recharge the batteries before tackling the weekly grocery run. Without doubt, Podium 1's location has aided it in establishing a strong base of loyal customers in a relatively short space of time, however the café has plenty going for it other than its location.

I am pleased to report that the coffee served up at this café is excellent, and the consensus amongst my group of local coffee-drinking mums confirms my opinion. At $3.50 for a cappuccino, it is of a fairly standard price for a Brisbane coffee; however the cup it is served in is not the largest of coffee cups. Perhaps order the mug if you are feeling in need of a decent sized dose of caffeine.

Their menu offers a good range of options and is also mid-ranged in terms of pricing. I ordered a clever bacon and egg breakfast menu item that comes with omelette-style eggs encased in a shell of crispy bacon (imagine a quiche with bacon instead of pastry) and was served with a slice of sourdough toast. Although it was delicious, at $7.50 I felt that it could have come with some tomato or a little garnish.

Service was very pleasing; with all staff behind the counter engaging in eye contact the moment I walked in the door. My order was taken very quickly and my coffee and meal also arrived promptly.

The cafe offers a very inviting and relaxing indoor seating area, and the outdoor seating is equally comfortable and more suitable for those with prams or older children.

All in all, Podium 1 is a welcome addition to the Moorooka café scene.

I was so excited to try this place out, but think they are really pushing it by charging $8 for the largest takeaway coffee. It is big but not as big as you can get from the Wild Bean at BP for example. And $8!?? WTF?? Hopefully they will realise that is waaaayyy too much and revise the price soon...
