There are few more qualified than wine writer Mike Bennie when it comes to understanding and sharing his knowledge of great wines.

The freelance wine and drinks writer and journalist, wine judge and presenter, who is based in Sydney, will join guests for a special tasting of some of Narrikup winery Poacher's Ridge's rare and highly awarded museum wines over the last decade on Saturday March 25.

The wine tasting is part of Australia's biggest food and wine festival Taste Great Southern , which has more than 40 individual events running in the southern part of Western Australia from March 23 to April 9.

Poacher's Ridge wines being tasted will include Rieslings, Marsanne, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon.

The Rieslings, in particular, will feature the 2006 and 2007 gold medal winners.

Participants will be introduced to Poacher's Ridge wines and guided through the various wine styles in a relaxed atmosphere at their own pace.

Cost includes a cheese or charcuterie plate plus a glass of wine of choice from the wine collection.

A selection of wines will be offered for sale on the day for attendees at a discounted price.

Established in 2000, Poacher's Ridge is a family-run vineyard and winery. Uniquely positioned in the Great Southern wine region of Western Australia, bookended by the Porongurup Ranges to the north-east and the Southern Ocean, our elevated vineyard is blessed with unique soil deposits and cooling winds that make for refined, elegant and graceful wines.

Poacher's Ridge endeavours to produce wines of extraordinary length and nuance, crafted with passion and a dedication to honest wine making traditions.

Although the winery only has 20 acres under the vine it takes great care cultivating grapes that best reflect the style of wines they wish to produce: cool-climate, medium-body varietals, with a particular focus on Shiraz, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Bennie, who is the Editor-At-Large and contributor to the highly respected online wine commentary website WineFront.com.au and a columnist/feature writer for benchmark publication Australian Gourmet Traveller Wine Magazine, will be offering his opinion of the wine being sampled.

He is currently wine/drinks editor for delicious magazine and his work has also appeared in Sun-Herald Style Magazine, Time Out Magazine Sydney and Melbourne, Sydney Morning Herald and The Age's Good Food section to name a few.

Mike is also an active wine judge in Australia and overseas, and a graduate of the prestigious Len Evans Tutorial and was named Wine Communicator's of Australia Digital Wine Communicator of the Year 2013.

Tastings will be offered at the winery at 1630 Spencer Rd, Narrikup on March 25 at 11am to 12.30pm, 1pm to 2.30pm and 3pm to 4.30pm.

Tickets are only available by pre-purchase and cost $35.
