Though Humphrey Bogart never said it, Woody Allen used it anyway.
Play It Again, Sam was Allen's homage to Bogart, delivered as a Broadway play in 1969. It was the play that broke him as a romantic comedy lead, a position he never looked back from.
The parallels with
Casablanca are abundant and at the forefront of this production which was immortalised in 1972 when it was made into a film. Though the plot elements may be relatively predictable considering the parallels it draws with Bogart's most famous work, it's witty and clever enough to be thoroughly entertaining in its own right.
Now, in 2017, Growl Theatre are bringing the production to the audiences of Brisbane in all its 1960s nostalgic glory. James Elliott fills the shoes of Woody Allen and with good reason. He's proved his range and abilities with roles in productions such as Mort, The Miser and Cluedo! The Interactive Game. Joining him are Jacob Phelan, Bianca Reynolds, Miranda Nelson, Brendan James, Stacey Parviainen & Emily McCormick, meaning this is sure to be one to remember.
It's being put on by Growl Theatre who have been responsible for great productions such as Lend Me A Tenor, Le Dieu du carnage and The Constant Wife in the past. This is one of Woody's finest moments and was always meant to be seen on the stage. Do yourself a favour and round up the usual suspects.
