Spacious campsites right on the water
I've found it – the holy grail of campsites.
Tucked away in the NSW Southern Highlands is Platypus Valley Riverside Camping, a beautiful piece of private land along 5km of the Wollondilly River. The hosts, Roger and Beth, graciously choose to share their property with keen campers – and we're so lucky that they do.
The property is accessible via a well-maintained dirt road (totally 2WD accessible), and is around a 2 hour drive from Sydney.
You'll find a number of sites ranging from $15-$25 per person/per night. Amenities are basic, with (well-maintained) bush toilets and no drinking water, but you'll be too distracted by your surrounds to care.
If you're looking to splurge, you can't go past the Gold Class site: with spacious, private sites right on the water, the luxury of a hot camp shower, a flying fox over the river and a canoe available for your use.

The canoe is available to all guests at the 'Gold Class' site. What a way to start the day!
Not one for water? No stress. You can also spend hours exploring the property, hanging out with some very lovely horses that roam around, or simply relaxing by the campfire (cut your own wood).

One of the lovely farm animals we bumped into on our walks!
And the best news? Because this is private land, available only with a booking, it'll never be crowded.
