Strength, cardio, flexibility. The big trio of a complete fitness regime. Yet despite the proliferation of a million-and-one "same same but different" gyms spread across our fitness-crazed city, rarely does one find a place that caters to all three. I've searched far and wide for a gym that will offer yoga, weights, and proper combat classes, for the same membership, in the same location. Finally, I stumbled across Platinum Extreme... You beauty!

Amongst the tight enclosures of St Leonard's, where even Coles struggles with floor space, some architectural prodigy has devised a gym with the works, all in a tidy space right next to the train station. As a two-level outfit, the upstairs area is neatly fitted out with a group fitness studio for yoga, pilates, cardio-boxing, and your standard list of Les Mills routines. Adjacent is a large matted area, hosting popular sessions of MMA and Brazilian Ju-Jitsu, which itself sits next to a weights room. Careful planning and consideration have gone into creating the latter – clearly by someone who takes their weight training seriously. With limited space, they've managed to squeeze in the machines, benches, and free-weights that actually matter, with enough of each to keep the big & buff protein fiends pumping the heavy ones to their hearts' content.

Downstairs, you'll find the usual cardio equipment (all the treadmills & stationary bikes that your favourite WeekendNotes author avoids like the plague – but hey, whatever rocks your boat). And finally, across a small dividing wall, they've laid out the pride and joy of Platinum Extreme – a stretch of space decked out with a full row of boxing and Muay Thai bags, skipping ropes, gloves, pads, kick shields, and so on – the full regalia of fighting equipment.

This last room is the real clincher, for myself and for countless other enthusiastic members - people of both genders, different goals, all ages, and all skill levels. Not only is it properly stocked with enough gear for more than two dozen trainees at any one time, but the owners have gone out of their way to hand-pick qualified, passionate, and capable trainers to run the show.

Having visited a handful of different combat gyms in the past, I've found out the hard way that decent trainers are not only crucial, but they are hard to find. The guys here are talented at their craft, they thoroughly enjoy their work, and they have all the time in the world for anyone who pays their classes the respect and focus they deserve. The growing class sizes speak for themselves, and no matter how far along you are in the world of combat sports, two things are guaranteed at the end of every session. Number one: you will have had a solid, thorough workout. And number two: you will have learned something new, and progressed a little further than before.

Their attitude rubs off on the members. The end result is an enjoyable, encouraging, and productive atmosphere, simultaneously catering to everyone from the most ambitious of fighters to the newest of novices. And a striking feature of Platinum's combat classes, compared to most other fight gyms I've visited, has been both a strong female presence, and a large number of foreign language speakers - laying testament to the trainers' abilities to teach, motivate, and encourage any hungry member from any demographic.

On the surface, a full membership seems pricey at $80 a fortnight. But in spite of the higher fees, the value is obvious for any devoted fitness freak. For example, smash out five combat classes and two yoga sessions each week, and you're spending a bargain $5.71 per class. If you're still hesitant to pay this, or if you think places like Finance First have a better offer, you can opt for the regular membership at half this rate – you'll get access to everything other than the combat classes. And if you're still not committed to hitting your full fitness potential, then just try it out for a free weekly trial. You won't regret it.

On a final note, a few sweeteners are thrown in for paying members: a free session with a physio-masseuse; plus a free one-on-one personal training session.

Five out of five. See you there!
