The programme notes for The Plastic Tree read "Just a little bit crazy…We decided to set ourselves a creative challenge: 12 days to put on a play!"

In this case, the challenge set by the cast and crew was just too high a mountain to climb. The Hughes family, made up of mother Meredith and daughters Christie and Cassie, along with their various male companions, is celebrating Christmas together for the first time in 5 years. The usual familial tensions associated with the overrated festive season are in evidence, heightened by the presence of those pesky gate crashers the skeletons in the cupboard.

For this reviewer there was a lack of authenticity in both the scripting and the acting, a direct result of the time pressures the cast and crew had set themselves. Weekend Notes loves the Owl and Pussycat and is a great supporter of their mission: "To create confrontational and innovative theatre that provokes thought and institutes a discussion."

We're all for encouraging the brave souls who put on a show for others to watch – and cast judgement. Even the best will in the world can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear, but we look forward to supporting this quirky and wonderful venue and its brave creative heart in 2015.
