Looking for an opportunity this weekend to learn about all things environmental, give back to the earth and have family fun - all while staying in a well-appointed campground with world-class music to entertain? The Planting Festival at Woodfordia (just over an hour's drive from the city) is what you are looking for!
I have participated in this event for 20 years since its first inception as the 'Treeplanting Weekend' with two venues, working bees and a few small workshops. It still retains its roots and core beliefs but has had controlled growth to allow more to experience the magic.
See a talk and take a walk to find out about 'The Wonderful World of the Bryophyte' (moss and moss-like plants) from Andrew Franks, curator of the Queensland Herbarium Bryophyte collection or have Kate Hofmeister tell you of the secret lives of Loggerhead Turtles on the Sunshine Coast.
See music from the likes of Mama Kin Spender, Shellie Morris, Martin Pearson, My Friend The Chocolate Cake and Greg Sheehan & Ben Walsh.
Workshops in wearable art, weaving, painting, silversmithing, and body percussion are just some of the workshops. After that is crafts of the kitchen with the likes of Matt Golinski, Brouhaha Brewing and so many others.
For the younger members of the family, there is a dedicated children's program, with five venues just for them. Better still, no cost for their workshops.
If you have no plans this weekend, make a day or a whole weekend here. You won't regret it. Hop online to theplantingfestival.com, to check out the full program and buy tickets, as there are no ticket sales at the gate.
