It's a simple fact, people need plants - for oxygen, food, medicine, clothing and shelter. Plants are essential for our survival and could even be described as our life-support system. That's why the work of the Australian PlantBank is so important.

The Australian PlantBank collects and conserves millions of seeds and other plant material. They investigate how plants are adapted to different environments, their role within ecosystems and their suitability for crops and gardens. Have you heard this alarming statistic? There are 10 staple food crops which feed 90% of the world's population. This is a figure that may not be sustainable with the rising populations of the future. This is why the research done by the Australian PlantBank is vital for our future as it will help to restore threatened habitats, conserve wild plant diversity and provide for a sustainable future.

Inside the PlantBank you can learn about the different ways seeds and plant materials are collected and stored. There is a lot of information on display and if you visit on the right day you may even see the scientists at work in their laboratories.

My favourite part of the PlantBank is the Diversity Wall, an interactive display that is both informative and engaging. It explains the importance of plants, through the use of images and historical, scientific and cultural objects. Visitors can open the drawers of the wall to discover further information.

On Saturday 19th August 2017 PlantBank is celebrating National Science Week with the best science party of the year. From 11am - 3pm the PlantBank research centre will be transformed with science activities, games and shows including:
