The 7th annual Plant Lovers Fair at Kariong this year was a triumph. The sun shone for the 40 exhibitors, visitors and volunteers who attended at the Kariong Mountains High School on 28th and 29th September.
Kariong is 71 kms from Sydney and 7klms from Gosford, part of the Central Coast. It is a family-friendly self- contained community of 6,385 lucky residents. The Central Coast is known for its great beaches, camping grounds and a thriving cultural centre.
Plant Lovers Fair is one of the few places you can find exotic plants not readily available in garden centres. Exhibitors travel from interstate to join other garden enthusiasts to teach, entertain, buy and sell. If you need someone to help planning a new garden or adding to an existing one, you will find something you can't live without.
Need a plant that will thrive in full sun facing north with strong winds and doesn't need much water? Tulbaghia Cominsii [fairy star] will fill the bill. It's a tough South African plant with dainty mauve flowers and needle-like growth. Looking for a new orchid? Stanhopea Tigrina from Venezuela will send the pulse of many orchid growers racing.
Carnivorous plants that thrive in water and eat insects to succulent cactus that grow in deserts… There aren't many plants that refuse to thrive in Australia.
This year, the speaker's programme included well-known experts willing to share their 'secret tips' to a receptive audience. Linda Ross and the entertaining Costa Georgiadis dressed as a comic garden gnome, roamed around the exhibitors enthusiastically giving advice on how to get the best results from the plants.
Maybe you want to start your garden from scratch? There are every type pf seeds. Have lunch or add to your gardening knowledge - there is a variety of books on sale. Just wandering around this Garden of Eden in a joy in itself. On hand are the Kariong Scouts, who will deliver your cargo to your car.
