When you think of Bali you probably think of a tropical, exotic getaway. Well you would be right. But when you start planning your trip it quickly becomes overwhelming. Tourism abounds in Bali and there is no shortage of anything.

It helps to take a step back and first decide what you want from this trip. Are you going because you want to sit on the black sand beaches all day long? Are you more of an adventurer who wants to trek out to the countryside or do you want to mix it up?

And then where do you want to stay? This is probably the hardest thing to decide.

If you are one of the numerous partiers that love Bali, then maybe you will want to stay in or around Kuta, a destination designed for partying. There are numerous places inland which will be less touristy and around the coast if you want something different. Ubud is in the middle and seems to be composed of unending shops full of items to be had.

Seminyak is quieter and has some lovely places to stay from backpackers to grand hotels. At the recommendation of friends we chose Seminyak and stayed at the Pelangi Bali with its close access to the beach. It was what we had hoped - not too crazy but definitely not sleepy either.

The beaches have a great lively atmosphere, complete with live music. There is no shortage of places to dine, some rooftop, some in bean bag chairs under colourful umbrellas and miles of black sand to walk on and watch the amazing sunsets.

The beach vendors are numerous. Note though that these people are just trying to make a living and are all very kind, hard-working individuals. And there are some amazing deals to be had.

You can hire a driver and have him take you to the Bali Bird Park then head to Kintamani Volcano for lunch where you sit at the edge and get up close and personal. On your way back stop in at the coffee plantation and try out some fresh Bali coffee. They even have Kopi Luwak for you to try.

The award winning Bali Adventure Tours is a must if you want to go white water rafting on the warm, scenic and lush Ayung River. Having been around for 20 years they are efficient, well organized and show you an amazing day. Check them out here .

The most expensive part is to get there. If you can find a good flight deal - take it. While you are there the food is wonderfully fresh and inexpensive. My hubby and I dined out one night, 1 entrée, 2 mains, 1 dessert and 3 drinks each, cost us $35. Australian. It is hard to beat the prices, the authentic, good natured people and their cooking skills.

Narrow it down, eliminate the over-abundance of information and you will have a great time.
