Learn about Busy Bees
Bees are fascinating insects. They are one of the busiest insects pollinating thousands of flowers and making delicious vitamin-enriched honey. To make a tiny spoon of honey involves a bee flying to thousands of flowers in their short lifetime. It's hard to fathom that a hive of bees will fly 90,000 miles, the equivalent of three trips around the earth to collect a mere kilogram of honey.
Sydney has over 350 types of native bees which don't live in hives - they live in dirt, hollow stems or holes in trees. This is why bees are so interesting and a perfect insect for the children to learn about. Take them along to Plan Bee, a workshop held in The Calyx inside the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney. They can join others in a fun class learning about bees and get to make a bee hotel to take home.
