Movie blockbuster season is fast approaching as summer in the northern hemisphere peaks over the horizon. However there is nothing quite like seeing your favourite retro movies back on the big screen. With this in mind, a number of venues across Sydney this autumn are showcasing some of the most fantastic cinema masterpieces for absolutely FREE. With the big cinema chains getting increasingly expensive over recent years, there is really no better solution for closet cinema lovers to get out and explore what Sydney has to offer. Here is a list of some of the best spots to catch free films around town.


Movie Mondays at the Soda Factory

The hip American inspired eatery and bar known as the Soda Factory, located in Surry Hills, will be showcasing FREE movies on Mondays during the autumn and early winter. The list of movies on show will be quite stellar, with the absolute stand out being Back To The Future on April 4th. Classic American inspired food will be on offer, including hot dogs and burgers, while guests sit back in alcoves and enjoy a free night at the movies. Free Film Series: Putting on a Show at the Art Gallery of NSW

The Art Gallery of NSW will also be offering a FREE series of movies that are inspired by the theme "Putting on a Show". Each film on the schedule will explore performance and theatricality, including classic musicals, rock documentaries and psychedelic horror. Undoubtedly the star attraction will be the Gene Kelly and Debbie Reynolds classic Singin' in the Rain. The schedule for Putting on a Show at the Art Gallery of NSW is as follows:

Artist Film Picks: Grayson Perry at the MCA

To coincide with his exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art, renowned British artist Grayson Perry has selected a diverse range of films to explore issues around masculinity and various gender representations. The films will screen on Saturdays at the Veolia Lecture Theatre in the MCA, with the movie program being absolutely FREE to the public. The stand out movie on the MCA schedule is undoubtedly Groundhog Day starring Bill Murray. The entire Artist Film Picks schedule is as follows:

Sky Terrace Rooftop Cinema at The Star

This autumn The Star casino complex will be hosting FREE movie nights on Thursdays at their roof top bar location known as Sky Terrace. Working in conjunction with sponsor Rekorderlig, the Sky Terrace rooftop cinema will offer guests a free cider upon arrival to accompany the stellar entertainment. Blockbuster hits such as The Avengers: Age of Ultron and Fast and the Furious 7 have already played in recent weeks, however there are still some highly entertaining movies on the horizon. The remaining rooftop cinema schedule is as follows:

Cinema in the Square at World Square

Since the start of this year World Square in Sydney has hosted a silent cinema, featuring deckchairs and headphones, as well as access to a multitude of food outlet options. Sessions occur every Wednesday night from 7pm and admission is absolutely FREE. Cinema in the Square has had a distinct retro flavour to its film selections, which over the last few weeks have included When Harry Met Sally, Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure and Jaws. The remaining film schedule will feature the one and only Gremlins. The current film schedule is as follows:
