If you want to learn for fun, for work, for your career or for school projects, or just need something to do if you're stuck at home, all you need is the will and the internet. That's right, you don't need money; these courses are free. If you've got some time on your hands and a passion to learn there is no shortage of educational and recreational free courses on line.

Amongst the five places listed below, you will find not hundreds but thousands of courses to choose from. Courses can be hours, days or weeks. Choose a topic and a time commitment that's right for you. Most of the courses are self-paced and so accord a great deal of flexibility. So if you're a busy mum, dad, worker or student you can still fit these in when you have the time.

1. FutureLearn. If you look through the FutureLearn course lists you may be as gobsmacked as I was to find this wonderful repository of free to learn topics. There are so many general interest courses here as well as professional topics, they have to be seen to be believed. For example, Understand the Weather, or Mindfulness for Well Being and Peak Performance, both designed to be three hours a week for four weeks. What about Start Writing Fiction, Fashion and Sustainability, An Introduction to Recreational Maths, or Introduction to Norwegian. The list goes on.

FutureLearn offers hundreds of on line courses. Most are completely free, some have optional paid upgrades and some are fee-paying. The courses are offered across 14 broad categories that translate into almost anything you can imagine. The categories are Business and Management; Creative Arts and Media; Nature and Environment; Politics and Society; Literature; Healthcare and Medicine; Science, Engineering and Maths; Law; History; IT and Computer Science; Teaching; Language; Study Skills; and Psychology and Metal Health.

Every run of a FutureLearn course has a set start date but you can join it and work through it after it starts. Content is shown on a week by week basis but you can move through the weeks at your own pace although learners are encouraged to complete the courses within two to four weeks of the end date.
