There are few more majestic sites than that of the slender arched neck and dark plumage of a Black Swan gliding across the surface of the water. Truly an impressive bird, the Black Swan or Cygnus atratus weighs up to 9 kg and has a wingspan of up to 2 metres at maturity.

Mostly found in wetlands and lagoons, this bird is a recognised symbol in Australia - making up part of the coat of arms and the badge of Western Australia , as well as the coat of arms of Canberra .

Sydney Park

A medium-sized neighbourhood park, the Eagle Farm Reserve has a beautiful pond in the centre where swans, ibis, swamp hens and different types of ducks live. A walking track encircles the pond and there is seating for lunch looking out over the water.

Australian Botanic Garden

Utilise the bird hide on the banks of Lake Nadungamba. Alternatively, move further into the gardens to the centrally located Lake Fitzpatrick and Lake Sedgewick for views of the local water fowl. Picnic tables are available on the banks. Other attractions at the site include the peaceful Stolen Generations Memorial Walk .

Narrabeen Lakes

A haven for wild life, Narrabeen Lakes is the largest estuary system in Sydney's Northern beaches and Black Swans have been spotted near the southern shore of the lake near South Creek. While there, consider taking the picturesque Narrabeen Lagoon Bush Trail with it's stunning views of the lake.

Manly Warringah War Memorial Park

The Manly Dam makes up part of the Manly Warringah Memorial Park and has been the site of Black Swan release by the Taronga Conservation Society . The dam is great for mountain biking, and they have a number of walking tracks with scenic views .


Fagan Park

One of those impressive sprawling parks, Fagan Park is home to an historic house and adjoining buildings, an eco-garden and a 'Garden of Many Nations' which showcases gardens from around the globe. Head to the central lake for views of not only the local black swans but also eurasian coots, purple swamp hens and different varieties of ducks. Entry to the park is free, however parking is $5 per vehicle.
